What is Prostate Laser Surgery?
Laser prostate surgery is used to relieve moderate and severe urinary tract infections caused by enlarged prostate - a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
During a prostate laser surgery, your doctor inserts a scope into the head of your urethra. The prostate surrounds the urethra, and when the prostate is enlarged, it blocks the flow of urine into the bladder. Extemporized laser brings shrinkage forces or removes excess tissue from the prostate that blocks the flow of urine.
Asers use concentrated light to produce accurate and intense heat. There are several different types of prostate laser surgery, including:
1. Photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP). The laser is used to dissolve (evaporate) excess prostate tissue and enlarge the urinary tract. This procedure is usually used to treat prostate enlargement.
2. Holmium laser ablation of the prostate (HoLAP). This process is similar to PVP but uses a different type of laser.
3. Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP). The laser is used to cut and remove excess prostate tissue that blocks the urethra. Then another tool is used to cut prostate tissue into smaller pieces that are easily removed. HoLEP may be an option for men with a large enlarged prostate.
