What is Urology?

It is a specialty that deals with diagnosis, medical or surgical treatment of diseases pertaining to Male Genito-Urinary tract (i.e. Kidney, Ureter, Bladder, Prostate, Urethra, Testis and Penis), Female Urinary Tract (i.e., Kidney, ureter, Bladder and Urethra) and diseases of Adrenal Glands.

Who is a urologist?

Urologists diagnose and treat diseases of the urinary tract in men, women and children. They also diagnose and treat anything involving the reproductive tract in men. In some cases, they may perform surgery. For example, they may remove cancer or open up a blockage in the urinary tract

Common symptoms that should bring you to a urologist

1.Incontinence of Urine, meaning Loss of Bladder control which results in unwanted leakage of urine with Urgency (Urgency Incontinence) or loss of urine due to stress over lower abdominal muscles (stress urinary incontinence) or mix of both (Mixed Incontinence). This may be due to number of things that can cause incontinence. A few of the most common causes are Overactive Bladder, Diabetes, multiple Pregnancy or Childbirth, Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), Weak Bladder Muscles, Severe Constipation

2.Blood in the urine (Hematuria) which could indicate subjective condition like Cancer anywhere in Urinary tract or conditions like Kidney or Bladder Stones, Urinary Tract Infections (UTI), Prostate enlargement. It should never be neglected.

3. Stone anywhere in urinary track starting from the kidney all the way down to urinary bladder or urethra. These can be easily treated surgically through minimally invasive procedures without any cuts on the body. It may be due to recurrent UTI, Dehydration for long years, excessive calcium oxalate or uric acid in diet, may be family history of stone.

4. Erectile Dysfunction, Urinary Tract Infection, BPH, Bladder and Prostate cancer are many other problems treated by a Urologist
